Since we have been manufacturing child resistant lighters since 1993, we are in a position to bring the safety measures across all our lighter ranges quickly.
ALL our lighters are child resistant – and as a result of significant investment will feature a user friendly mechanism.
Our lighters will also feature a child-resistant mechanism (flowered wheels and strip).
We are also printing labels on the body of each lighter, to indicate that they are child resistant.
To help prevent confusion in the market, the European Federation of Lighter Manufacturers has established an official Child Resistant logo.

We have ensured that this logo is evident on all our lighter trays so that both consumers and the trade are aware that all our lighters are Child Resistant and that we put safety first.
Our work does not end here, Swedish Match is continuously working to improve the quality and the safety of all our products so that consumers can continue to feel confident and reassured by our products.
The Swedish Match Child Resistant II System:
Lighter Model: Maxi Cricket Lighters II
CR II principle:

The sparkwheel assembly is effectively made up of 3 elements, a sparkwheel and 2 thumbwheels.
The thumbwheels of the ignition system are able to be rotated independently and separately from the sparkwheel and each other.
Only by applying a sufficient coupling force on the thumbwheels the sparkwheel can be activated and will produce sparks. |
System detection-Quality Control in process:
•
• |
At incoming inspection, samples from each batch of thumbwheels are checked for minimum friction and lifetime.
100% of the lighters are automatically tested on the assembly line: upon freewheeling of both
thumbwheels (go/no go) non complying lighters are rejected. |
The Swedish Match Child Resistant III System:
Lighter Model: Original & Mini CR
CR III principle:

The lighter is equipped with a strip between the thumbwheels (actuating sections) of the spark wheel.
The topside of this strip is substantially flush with the outside perimeter of the thumb wheels.
The strip limits reaching and gripping the sparkwheel.
The strip also causes friction to the thumb while it rotates the sparkwheel.
The thumb wheels are equipped with less teeth in order to limit the grip. |
System detection-Quality Control in process:
| • |
100% of the lighters are automatically tested on the assembly line for presence and proper position of the strip. Presence of the strip also guarantees the presence of the required flowered CRIII sparkwheel. |

Lighter Models: Electronic CR and Pocket CR
CR ED4 principle:

An integrated latch is protruding from the pushbutton over the top of the tank body wall, preventing the pushbutton to be depressed and therefore preventing fuel release and piëzo mechanism triggering.
In order to get ignition, an additional movement has to be made: to unlock the latch by pushing it inward.
The latch system requires an unlocking force to move it to the unlocked position.
During actuation of the pushbutton and during the ignition sequence of the lighter, the latch is automatically and positively reset in the lock position. |

100% of the lighters are automatically tested on the assembly line.
For operating sequence, unlocking force and overriding force, if within specified area
(go/no go).
Non complying lighters are rejected. |

Lighter Model: Poppell Flint lighter

The sparkwheel assembly is effectively made up of 3 elements, a sparkwheel and 2 side wheels.
The circumference of the side wheels is smooth and are smaller than the striking wheel.
The cap or windshield is projecting above both the side wheels and the striking wheel. This all makes is more likely for the thumb to slip, making the lighter more difficult to operate, especially for small children.
An extra spring is put the free end of the lever making depression harder. |

Lighter Model: Poppell Electronic lighter
CR Principle:

The Piëzo element in this lighter has stronger springs. Above a certain force it has been found small children are not able to ignite the lighter. |
